But Pearson has not lived his whole NASCAR life in Petty's shadow. In his sterling 27-year career, he won the Rookie of the Year Award the year after Petty, he won the Daytona 500 (albeit only once) and won three Winston Cup championships. He also won 10 or more races in five different seasons, including a high of 16 in 1968.
He is also one of only a few drivers to have won the four major Winston Cup races (Daytona 500, Winston 500, Coca-Cola 600 and Southern 500). Except for the Daytona 500, he won the other three major races three times each. Darlington, the site of the Southern 500, was the most successful venue for Pearson as he won 10 races at that track, more than any other driver.
